As a Danish artist who grew up in Copenhagen and now split my time between London and Copenhagen, I'm often asked about the concept of Hygge. Hygge is a Danish term that's difficult to translate into English, but it essentially means "coziness" or "comfort". However, Hygge is more than just a word - it's a way of life, a feeling, and a philosophy that the Danish people take very seriously. Growing up in Copenhagen, Hygge was all around me. It was in the soft glow of candles on long winter nights, the feeling of being snuggled up in a warm blanket with a good book, and the scent of freshly baked Danish pastries (Wienerbrød) on a Sunday morning. Hygge is about creating a feeling of contentment, comfort, and connection with the people and things around you.
At its core, Hygge is about finding joy and satisfaction in the simple things in life. It's about taking the time to appreciate and enjoy the present moment. It's about creating a comfortable and cozy atmosphere that makes you feel safe and relaxed. Hygge is about being present and mindful, and it's something that can be enjoyed by anyone, anywhere.
In my art, I often try to incorporate the feeling of Hygge. I use soft colors and textures that evoke feelings of warmth and naturalness. Each piece is created with care and attention to detail to ensure that it can help create a peaceful and calming atmosphere in any space, whether it's a bedroom, living room, or office.
If you're interested in incorporating Hygge into your daily routine, here are some tips that can help you achieve a more Hygge-filled life:
1. Embrace the Outdoors Denmark is a country that values its natural beauty, and spending time in nature is one of the most "Hyggelige" activities you can engage in. Whether it's a walk in the park, a hike in the woods, or a day at the beach, being outside can help you feel more connected to the world around you.
For instance, you can take a stroll in the park and enjoy the beauty of nature. Take in the sight of the trees and the colors of the flowers. Listen to the sound of the birds chirping, and feel the warm sun on your skin. These simple activities can help you feel more alive and present.
2. Surround Yourself with Cozy Things Creating a cozy and inviting space is one of the most important aspects of Hygge. To achieve this, you could surround yourself with soft blankets, fluffy pillows, and warm lighting. Add some plants and candles for a touch of natural beauty.
You can also light some candles and place them in different areas of your home and use subtly scented candles to create a more relaxing atmosphere.
3. Slow Down and Savor the Moment
Hygge is about being present and mindful. Take the time to enjoy a cup of tea or coffee, read a book, or simply sit and watch the world go by. Enjoy the little things and find joy in everyday moments.
Take a few deep breaths and savor the taste of your drink. Take some time to appreciate the present moment and feel grateful for the small things in life.
4. Spend Time with Loved Ones
Hygge is also about connection and community. Spend time with family and friends, share a meal, or simply enjoy each other's company. Make time for the people who matter most to you.
To incorporate this into your life, you can plan a cozy dinner party with close friends or family. Cook a simple and comforting meal, like a hearty soup or stew, and enjoy it together. Play some board games or cards and enjoy each other's company. Spending time with the people you love can bring a lot of joy and create a sense of connection and warmth.
5. Embrace Simplicity
Hygge is about enjoying the simple things in life. Embrace a minimalist lifestyle and focus on the things that truly matter. Clear out the clutter and create a space that feels peaceful and calm. Get rid of items that no longer serve a purpose or bring you joy. Focus on keeping only the things that truly matter to you. Create a space that feels warm, welcoming, and peaceful. One that can help you feel more relaxed and centered.
